March 2001  Griffith Observatory, Museum of Television and Radio , Cold Stone Creamery

Griffith Park Observatory

King Wai and I love astronomy, so we were thrilled to learn that we can so easily access the Griffith observatory. It has been around since 1935, when light pollution from the city of Los Angeles was not even a consideration on the books.

Inside the observatory is a  science center, a planetarium with a laser light show, and three telescopes.

My favorite display in the science center is the pinhole camera which really works.

One of the three telescopes points toward the sun, and shows live images on clear days. This is very interesting to watch, especially this year when so many solar flares and coronal mass ejections are being reported.

Museum of Television and Radio

Nestled in beautiful Hollywood, the museum of Television and Radio has archives and special features of TV shows that you might have trouble seeing otherwise.

The guidebooks say that the museum is free, and is by donation only.  However when you walk in, a well dressed attendant behind a cash register tells you that there is a RECOMMENDED donation of $8 per person and she GLARES at you until you make your payment by cash or credit card.

This museum is in hollywood and is the only museum I have ever been to that has (free) valet parking. The first time I (Lynda) went, like the hillbilly that I am, I told the valet attendant "no thank-you, that I would park the car myself", and I did.

Traffic versus Traffik

When "Traffic" came out in theatres in March of 2001, we found out that is was based on a BBC mini-series that aired in Britain ten years ago, called "Traffik". We don't have cable so we missed the re-airing on TV but ..... it was playing at our trusty museum of television and radio. We were able to see it in two three-hour showings at the beautiful museum in Hollywood.  Traffic is the story of drugs.  It covers people's involvement from the producers to the traffickers to the policers to the politicians to the addicts.    I (Lynda) loved the BBC version tremendously. I recommend it to anyone.

Another adventure in California is visiting the best ice cream store in the world!!!!!

Remember how, when you were a kid, you used to take your bowl of ice cream and you would mix it up with your spoon to a creamy consistency, before you ate it.  Then you would scoop it into your mouth while you bragged to your siblings that you had soft ice cream.  Well this place is my childhood dream.

At the Cold Stone Creamery, they do all the mushing for you, on a refrigerated "cold stone". And they mix in any goodies you want, like chocolate or cookies or nuts.  Boy its doesn't get any better than this.
